SUMMARY:Organizations and the Future of Work — at Academy of Management
DESCRIPTION:Going to AOM – remote or in Seattle — August 2022?\nTranslating Theory into Practice: Organizations and the Future of Work (session 411)\nSession: We’ll be collaborating on a hybrid interactive session for 2 hours.  You must be an AOM member for the year and registered to the conference to attend. \nSession Links and World Cafe Table Links here \nBackground: The framing of the “future of work” has grown in visibility and scope over the past few years. Researchers have been positing deep change impacts from the data- and machine-enmeshed transformations in work for many years (Keynes\, 1930; Zuboff\, 1988; Adler\, 1992; Rifkin\, 1995; Brynjolfsson & McAfee\, 2012; Susskind & Susskind\, 2015; Hodgson\, 2016; Frey & Osborne\, 2017\, Daugherty & Wilson\, 2018; Hirschi\, 2018\, Tschang & Albiral\, 2019; Raisch & Karkowski\, 2020; Schulte et al\, 2020). Large consulting organizations have taken up the challenge\, building full practice and research areas (PWC\, 2014; Illanes et al\, 2018; Schwartz et al\, 2019). This PDW will be held as a hybrid session. It will be a collaboration between scholars and practitioners at both the in-person and virtual versions of the Academy of Management (AOM) Conference for 2022. We will examine the accelerating changes impacting three frames of work – the work\, the workplace\, and the people/systems — from different points-of-view. Using the World Cafe framework\, participants will explore emergent change\, frictions\, and our own organizations. During this era of unprecedented instability\, our core question will be how organizations and leaders can thrive in this changed landscape by embracing the future of work through new insights and capabilities.

SUMMARY:Pixelating Reality: Smartphones Shift Now — at SXSW
DESCRIPTION:Session Description\nMany of us carry smartphones wherever we go. Increasingly\, we are leaning on them as active and passive gathering devices of data and images. Google Glass and other recording devices bring the question further front and center—how is our recording and perpetually digitally checking in affecting our everyday lives? How are those check-ins and recordings shifting our being “present” in our shared Now and Here? Are we increasingly taking the opportunity to be digitally Elsewhere and not Present?\nReflection\nWe enjoyed sharing insights at SXSW Interactive 2014 on this question — How is smartphone use pixelating reality\, blowing it up and turning it into shiftable bits of data so we are making different decisions with its Time and Place?\n\nWe are experiencing a massive change in social and personal behavior\, catalyzed by the increasing penetration of smartphones.  We have had digital cameras and cell phones for many years.  The intriguing shift stems from both (a) casual photography with no lag time to distribute and immediate connectivity\, and (b) instant connecting with small screens wherever we go.\n\nWhat has shifted?  This direction of thought looks at how this affects our Here and Now\, as well as the question of being Together.\n\n How are we Present if we are always checking in to other information and places?\n Are we shifting our energies to auto-documenting our activities through pictures and other actions to the detriment of the activity and connections that we are experiencing live?\n\nYou can enjoy two elements of the presentation below.\n\nFirst\, this video outlines some of the questions we examined:\n\n\n\nSecond\, here’s the SlideShare of the presentation from SXSW\, without any audio.\nPixelating Reality: How Smartphones Shift Now @SXSW from Gigi Johnson
